Campers With Dog In Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness Area June 28, 2026
June 8, 2026 - Jeremy Halleaux holds the leash of his dog, Elvis, while standing next to a trail sign with Tyler Cross during a hike along an established trail to their camp site (below) at a planned dispersed camping area in the Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness Area of the Manistee National Forest in Michigan. The Nordhouse Dunes Wilderness Area is a 3,500-acre protected space in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula featuring towering sand dunes and 4 miles of undeveloped Lake Michigan shoreline. It is highly rated for hiking, primitive camping, and wildlife viewing. By maintaining backcountry access across national forests, the Forest Service fulfills the foundational mandate to manage public lands for multiple uses, balancing resource protection with primitive, high-value recreational opportunities for the public.
